Modest shorts for the gym, swimming and MMA

What to look for in modest men's shorts for each activity, so you stay covered and comfortable whether you lift, swim, fight or run.

The gym

Squats, deadlifts, lunges and stretching are where ordinary shorts ride up. Look for a built-in compression underlayer, 4-way stretch fabric and a secure drawstring waist. Zip pockets keep your keys and phone safe on the bench or the floor.

Swimming

Swimming is where many Muslim men struggle to find something that covers properly. Wear shorts that are designed to stay in place in the water, with an inner layer and a secure waist. After a swim, rinse them in fresh water, machine wash cold and hang them to dry. Do not tumble dry or bleach them.

MMA, boxing and grappling

Combat sports need shorts that move with you and do not catch. A stretch fabric and a built-in inner layer give coverage through kicks, takedowns and ground work. Zip pockets can be a problem in some clubs and competitions, so check your gym's rules on zips and pockets before you train or compete in any shorts.

Running and everyday training

For running, you want a waistband that stays put and fabric that stretches rather than rides up. Sitr awrah shorts use 4-way stretch performance fabric with side slits, so the legs move freely.
